Ever since I was a kid I have been fascinated by the ivory billed woodpecker This extremely rare bird possibly extinct thrived at one time in the swamps and Cypress bayous of the SE United States Bigger than a crow it is one of the largest woodpeckers in the world As a boy I read books and articles about the ivory bill and even featured this magnificent bird in one of my elementary school reports Over the years I have read The Grail Bird Hot on the Trail of the Ivory billed Woodpecker and The Lord God Bird So when I saw the book jacket for THE LIFE LIST OF ADRIAN MANDRICK I was immediately intrigued Adrian Mandrick is a 41 year old anesthesiologist who also happens to be addicted to prescription drugs In addition he is one of the top amateur bird watchers in the country with a life list of 863 species He started bird watching and exploring the outdoors with his mother June when he was just a boy However Adrian s parents separated and she moved him and his brother from North Carolina to Kingston New York Young Adrian possesses lost memories and recurring fears about his drunken father Dean the man they all left behind He realizes that Dean and June often fought but there seems to exist many gaps in his memory as to the truth of what his father and mother were actually like Through various circumstances he grows up mistrusting both of his parents and Adrian s sanctuary of pill popping begins in adolescence Some reviewers have labeled Adrian as your basic jerk irresponsible self absorbed untrustworthy and so on And while I could really see moments when he was all of those things I cared about the guy because of how he grew up and how his personal history really molded and shaped him into the adult he became In my mind Adrian seemed lost and flawed as opposed to being intentionally selfish or deceitful To me it is always evident that Adrian loves his wife and two children but the drugs and his insecurities and even the constant uest for new birds undermine his efforts at being a better husband and father I viewed Adrian as a man that I kept rooting for rather than dismissing him because he appeared to be just coping and existing and getting by I sensed that deep down within him there was a love of life there somewhere For this being her first novel I was impressed with Chris White s writing and her ability to crawl inside the mind of a male protagonist I also thought she did a fine job in her research for this book Her prose had many instances of not only real beauty but also real humor I think the last 50 pages of THE LIFE LIST OF ADRIAN MANDRICK really elevated the entire story and brought events to a kind of closure with an unexpected twist or two I also believe this was a great book where you had to be patient and really invest yourself in the characters and allow the tale to play outADRIAN His father didn t like to lose So Adrian stayed up as late as he had to sometimes past midnight listening for the creaky door the
